My current travel camera

For my travels I want to spend quite a bit of it getting some really nice photos. If you’re going somewhere as diverse and beautiful as South America, I’m happy I’ve got a camera which has proved over the last couple of years, which is a weatherproof Panasonic Lumix DMC-FT2.

I’ve had it for a couple of years now. I got it because it got some pretty good reviews about how well it withstood abuse, in that it can be used underwater, in the snow, in dusty deserts, on the beach etc.

It’s served me very well, especially when I took it through some frozen waterfalls in Iceland, and I think it will be perfect for the varied landscapes I’m likely to encounter on my travels (from beaches to mountaintops to deserts to being dropped on the floor in salsa clubs…).

The only thing I will say is that as with most compact camera, the sensor in the camera is really quite tiny. In bright conditions this has still resulted in many great pictures, but when the light becomes dimmer then the pictures have suffered. The worst example of this was when I was trying to get a picture of the northern lights in Iceland, the pictures just came out black. This is why I’m after a new camera with a larger sensor (which I’ll talk about in a future blog post). But I’m definitely taking this one. I think there is new version available on the market now, but this one has served me well, so check out the link above if you’re looking for a good quality, rugged camera.

I will also share one more link, which is my favorite mini-tripod. It’s got flexible rubber legs so you can attach it to more or less any surface, which has been great for me when travelling alone, and I’m already looking forward to whatever new creative pictures I can get with it 🙂
